[Happy Zen Level 1]: Awareness
“Awareness” is the main axis throughout the entire [Happy Zen] course. Mingyur Rinpoche introduces us to awareness through a practice he calls “open awareness.” Taking the ocean and waves as metaphors; the introduction of the ocean is – the innate vast, clean and pure heart. This is our essence, it is always there, it doesn’t get better or worse. This is who we really are.
As for the waves, if we don’t recognize them, this basic awareness will be obscured. The waves themselves, we know, are awareness. The ocean and waves are inherently wet, both are water. But, often we are deceived and only see the waves.
When we start practicing meditation, we begin to deal with this problem in a practical way. When we experience impetuous and scattered thoughts, we usually either try to force them to calm down, or we let them lead us to our wildest dreams. In [Happy Zen Level 1], we completely change the rules of the game and learn to give thoughts an “errand”. Rather than trying to block out the thoughts that naturally arise during meditation, we use them as an aid to awareness during meditation. Awareness is our essence and can be connected to it at any time, place, and situation, and can even transform any experience into a friend.
What will I learn?
In [Happy Zen Level 1], Mingyur Rinpoche will teach us how to change the way we deal with stress and emotions through meditation, and how to calmly face all aspects of life with mindful awareness.
